Topic: Bought it but don't got it questions Posted: 11 Jun 2017 at 2:39pm |
So, yesterday we took the plunge and bought a 2016 R-pod 171. It will be ready Wednesday afternoon and I only have about 2 million questions between now and then. Typically I would wait till we got the camper and figure it out myself but we are leaving Thursday for a previously planned trip to the Grand Canyon! I'm counting on the collective wisdom of the nicest people on this forum (and even the not so nice!) to help me out.
1. When I pick it up Wednesday afternoon, are there any known problem areas that I need to pay particular attention to?
2. Does anyone know the dimensions of the opening for the pass through storage? I want to find some storage bins yet.
3. Would love to know what size socket I will need for the stabilizer jacks.
4. What brand is the convection microwave? We would love to learn more about it before we have to cook dinner in it!
This is our fourth camper, but our first R-Pod thanks for any other tips and advice. We're looking forward to being a part of this community.
Thanks,
John & Joann

You didn't say if from a dealer or private party. In either case have them familiarize you with operations. Make sure things work. Wheel bearings and tires in good shape, tow vehicle ready, safety stuff operational. Power works. Do a thorough check, once you leave with it, you own it.
The log nuts and stabilizers are standard 3/4". Lot of folks use a battery drill, socket capable to lower/raise stabilizers, lug nut torque should be checked.
On my first trip, I was most concerned with safety, then as we went along I added the must have stuff, which I have now thinned out. I try to stay with essentials to get me there and home.
Happy Trails.

The dimensions should be the same as on our 177 and they are 34" x 10" and 20" x 10". Sorry can't help you on the microwave. We usually boondock so special ordered ours w/o microwave/convection oven or A/C. Don't know what your TV is but at least get a anti-swaybar link for stability and safety while towing. Make sure you are shown how the valves work for your water (is it still winterized or in summer mode?) so that you get hot and cold water and so you don't burn out your water heater element. Also have the seller/dealer show how the A/C and furnace works, take a video of all this as some may get forgotten in all the excitement.

Welcome!
The convection micro is marvel (IMHO) micro's, bakes, and browns. However it's a little tricky and you WILL NEED THE MANUAL. Last night my wife explained to me that to bake she had to preheat to 425, then it beeps when 425, then open the door(within 2 minutes) put food in and THEN set the timer. We have also used it to toast english muffins and bake homemade pizza. Doubles as a toaster oven! There is even a micro/ bake option. Why are not all microwaves built like this?

Sorry for the delay in responding- I'm working remote this week and the promised wifi has been under whelming!
Mike - thanks for the info. Getting it new from the dealer - thanks for the stabilizer jack size.
Jato- thanks for the tips. Great idea to video it!
Voisj- it's funny but one of the things my wife is very excited about is the convection oven. I feel it's going to force one in the house as well!
Thanks again for great advice!

You can buy a 'home' convection microwave but It's a bit more $$$. For years I had a Panasonic inverter with convection. Worked like a charm. It's bulkier than a standard microwave though. Problem #1 with it is that it generates more heat than a standard micro (when using the convection part), so your placement in the kitchen has to be made to cope with it.
I have not used the micro in the r-pod yet though. We mainly use our small BBQ for cooking while camping.

Thanks for the heads up on the heat aspect, I'll have to take that into consideration.
