Topic: Garmin BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera Posted: 08 Feb 2015 at 12:27pm |
I'm a fairly new RPod owner and find myself doing lots of reading and research. I've been considering the Garmin Camera mentioned above. It pairs with many GPS devices and I'm thinking it would enhance visibility and improve safety. Not only does it show what's behind when backing up, but it can also be set up to a constant display mode between rear view and navigation display simply by pressing a button. Sounds interesting....

A few years ago, I installed a wireless backup camera on my r-pod. I installed it inside, pointing out the bottom of the rear window. It functioned well (as in it connected and displayed a clear picture), but the fisheye lens on the camera is designed to bring the ~20' behind a vehicle into focus which really limits its usefulness.
The camera really wasn't much use as a rear view mirror while travelling down the highway - the things I was interested in seeing were generally well beyond its 20' range. And, to tell you the truth, the camera wasn't that useful for backing the trailer into a campsite either; sure, it would show an imminent impact with a tree, but the visual range wasn't far enough to sight down a campsite and the fisheye distorted everything, so it just wasn't very helpful to me.
After a year of experimenting with it, I removed the camera and installed it on a friend's minivan.

Hmm, maybe I just complete passing a little sooner, but I'm thinking I might try out one of these: https://youtu.be/YJfhIQxSYq4?t=29s They're on sale at Canadian Tire until Wednesday for $99, wireless camera+monitor. I figure I'd be able to install as shown in this video for always-on operation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1ImZm9hDfU.
This is my first trailer, and I'm looking for any help I can get with "is it safe to merge/complete a pass" and "is there a child on a bike back there" type stuff. But on the other hand I'm not keen to waste $100 :)
Edit: Ack, that's just an add-on camera for $99. Thought the deal was too good to be true :(

We use our go pro. The app for the phone lets us use it as the screen.

I try to go by the old rule -- "There is no excuse for a backing accident if there are two people in the vehicle". I try to hardly ever have to pass another vehicle in traffic.

Hey John in Idaho, travelling solo , I do imagine it's real easy with another set of eyes though. Made the decision not to let the solo thing stop me though.
