Refrigerant does costs a fortune, and you can chalk that up to previous versions that destroyed the ozone layer.

The new ones are still bad as greenhouse gases (some are crazy bad!!) but they no longer destroy the ozone layer. It is illegal to vent any refrigerant into the air. It is supposed to be recovered using a recovery machine if possible. If it all leaked out, then there's nothing that can be done about that except finding and repairing the leak(s), pressurize with nitrogen to test for pressure holding, then evacuate the system with a hard vacuum, and recharge to a specified weight.

If you ever have to do the work yourself, the biggest danger is the refrigerant is always under high pressure. Even when it's not running, it has a very high pressure. It will rapidly expand when released into the atmosphere, and will burn (FROSTBITE!!) skin on  contact. Dangerous.

Get someone trained to do it, or read like crazy until you know what you're getting into before tackling an A/C repair on your own.

hang with me guys.  I just came back, i dont believe the compressor clutch is engaging.  in fact i didnt even hear the compressor cycling this time.  so i guess get the relay which i can get, but not exactly sure which one in the box it is.  it doesn't specifically id clutch relay.  there is one that says i  "ac compressor relay" which also includes day time running lights, AIR system, and rear window defogger.  theres also another that says "ac relay".  hogone

thanks for the info.  so the compressor clutch engaging is different than the compressor coming on and off?  not signing till this weekend, then will check things over again.  now to find a trustworthy ac guy that will diagnose properly and fix (refill correctly).    hogone

Does the compressor clutch actually engage? Yes, then no refrigerant left in the system. NO, then the A/C clutch fuse and relay should be checked for correct operation.

A leak test can be performed using dye.  The use of an electronic refrigerant sniffer is very difficult in an automobile.

Proper vacuum evacuation of the system is critical and it should be blown out a few times with dry nitrogen before pulling the final vacuum and charging.

Good luck.

I shouldn't say this but my '94 F-150 with 310K miles still has A/C that works, never had to add any R-12 to it . . . .yet.  I do have some sitting in the garage, just in case.  Have had 1 clutch job at 260 K miles, so that shouldn't be a problem for quite some time.  My only worry are when will the next deer jump in front of me (that would be # 32 kills).

Hogone,

Yeah it's low on Freon. 4 years is awhile, sounds great you have a log. All your symptoms are low pressure. What they do is start and stop. Near the accumulator is the switch, you can jumper it, but with low Freon you may or may not get cold AC. It can't run on low pressure. If I could look at it I could help. Sounds like a sweet deal. The low pressure switch is a two prong switch with a plug on it (a connector), it won't let the compressor come on with low pressure. I checked YouTube and they have some informative vids. A good AC dude will figure out in 5 mins, I could.
