Topic: Tires made in China Posted: 04 Jul 2017 at 3:37pm |
We just finished a 5,000 km trip on the tires that came with the Pod. Other than an annoying habit of losing air - couple of pounds every couple of days it seemed - no issues. We've had the dealership look at them but other than replacing one valve stem everything was reported to be good. I discovered during the couple of weeks we were travellling less and less places have air pumps and those that do want your Visa card to use it. I got a small compressor so should be the end of that problem.

Our first set of "C" rated tires gave us over 20,000 miles and even after that there was plenty of tread left on them but we replaced them because they were over 6 years old. We replaced that set with another "C" rated tire, Hartlands, last year.

I don't think so. I think either STs or LTs are sufficient for single axle trailers. The smart folks tell me the STs are norm for dual axle trailers. I have Carlisle's and I believe they outsourced to China. They are good tires however. I don't see an issue with LTs and side scuff.

I wouldn't worry too much, most ST rated tires are made in China. Just replace them at around the 5 year mark.
I have been wondering if there is a reason we can't run LT rated tires? I know they aren't the best choice for a 2 axle trailer due to the side loads when turning, but is there a reason we can't use them on our single axle trailers?

Not sure what brand your tires are, but a plus to have the D rated tires. POD on.

We just did a 2600 mile trip on our new 171. Gave the tires a good inspection afterward and found nothing to concern me. I'd say watch them carefully if you're concerned about them and later on when they do actually wear out replace them with a brand you feel more comfortable with. It may be that like me, you have had such lousy tires in the past you're a little gun shy about a long road trip. My issue was they were old tires on old campers and they didn't last… These are new tires give them a chance. Just my thoughts.

It boils down to what will make you feel comfortable while towing. We inspect our tires regularly and have had no problem with the tires that came on either of our rpods.

So we picked up our new r179 a couple of weeks ago. This Weekend we are heading out on a 3,200 mile trip. The tires are loadrange D tires but that made in China makes me nervous. I am considering changing them out for a light duty truck tire with the same load range. I would use a Goodyear or Michelin, some name brand tire. What do you think, am I over reacting?
