Topic: Metal "carport" style units for r pod storage Posted: 28 Aug 2017 at 8:18pm |
I am in the process of building a metal shed for my rpod. It will be closed in on two sides to protect against the damaging Texas UV rays. I can almost guarantee that if left out in the sun and weather long enough any fiberglass trailer will deteriorate and develop leaks.

Like everything it matters where you live. I've lived most of my life in the SW and Midwest, in the SW gelcoat is toast in the sun, you have to keep your stuff out of the sun. In TN, this is the first year I will put my Pod inside, I kept is outside uncovered and regularly waxed and cleaned, no cover. When I covered the mold issues intensified. Decisions have to be made that pertain to your conditions. There is no right answer for everyone.

If you live in the desert southwest, the sun is brutal and fiberglass will get "hairy" when it gets old, then you have to sand it and reseal it with gelcoat and re-paint it. Been down that road with fiberglass cars and the roof or a VW camper van. The sun fogs all the lenses on our cars and campers if they sit outside also and ruins the interior and dashes. Very brutal. I have a 4 1/2 car garage for my cars/trucks/motorcycles and the big car port for the RVs. Saves a lot of money in the long run.

We did, not an issue. We did use a fabric cover the first couple years, but didn't bother after, since we try to get out in the winter and do some camping anyways.

I built a metal carport out of 2X2 steel square tubing on the end of my house and covered it with metal roofing material, but the west sun still entered the end and put damaging sunlight on my RV, so I closed in the end with house siding. Now it's covered on three sides (the house on one side, the end I closed in, and the north side I brought the metal roofing down over the side all the way to the ground. It's like a garage with no doors on one end, but it keeps it out of the weather.

I had a 2010 R Pod 172 and when we were not camping, I covered it with a Classic Cover. Always a pain to put on and also I had some mildew and slight mold problem. So, I quit using the cover and the problem went away. We recently bought a 2016 R Pod 172 and I would like to cover it with a metal carport type cover that we can just drive it under after camping for storage to keep it out of the elements. Do any of my fellow poders out there have their pod stored under such a cover. If so, what would you recommend. I live in middle Georgia if any one would like to recommend someone. Or, please tell me your experience with this type of cover. Any advice will be appreciated.
