Be sure to relieve the pressure on the water heater before you loosen the anode rod or you'll get quite a squirt.  Lift the little handle on the pressure relief valve and let the pressure dissipate.  It only takes a second.

On our 2009, 172 there was a middle valve, but it was eliminated in subsequent years as it was a waste of materials and labor and not needed to bypass the water heater.

Are you talking about the valve that is for the suction line? It should be there....somewhere...

Curious as to when FR went to the 2 valve system.  Has it been quite a few years?

No middle valve, you're good. A middle valve would be a mixing valve to mix hot and cold water. Just take out the anode now to drain the tank.

I just winterized my 2020 171, and there is no “middle” bypass valve? Just one at the top and one at the bottom? So I just turned them both off which sends the water past the heater. But I thought there was supposed to be one in the middle?
