There is a hard steel rod about an 1/8 inch thick that runs the whole lenght of the anoid rod so it should not fall apart in the tank. I would think that you could get at least one more season out of it. I use the garden hose to flush the tank out at the end of the season to get the mineral deposits out of there. Goose

I think the actual anode rod is stainless steel with a magnesium coating. I don't think the rod can snap off. I plan to keep the same rod as long as there is dufficient magnesium remaining.

If it weren't for that narrow part I would say keep it for another year, but that narrow part might snap off long before the rest of the rod disintegrates.

I have a 9.5" anode rod. Most of the stem is in decent shape. On the area closest to the thread (about 1/2" wide) is depleted down to about a 1/4" diameter. The rest of the rod has wear (pockmarks) but is still almost 100% original diameter.
It's a new trailer that I've had for 7 mos. and I barely use the water heater. I've only turned it on once and that was 2 weeks ago. When do I replace the anode?
