No harm at all, it was designed to run the 12 volt (propane) side of the water heater while you camp.  It won't run the 120 volt electric element - you must be plugged in for that to work.

Will it harm my battery if I use it to see if I can fix the water heater myself, by, as suggested, turning the furnace on, etc.?
