Topic: First Impressions w/new tow vehicle Posted: 07 Apr 2016 at 7:46pm |
Sounds great Oliveman. You have a great TV and shouldn't encounter any problems with just a sway bar. We tow our 177 with an Explorer using only a sway bar for the past 5 years, no complaints thus far. We usually tow with a full tank of water and have had numerous times with very strong cross winds, the sway bar has performed very well for us. Enjoy your trip !

I just purchased a R-178 and pulled it home with my 2015 Pathfinder. I only had a sway bar added and it pulled great at 60mph and 65mph to pass slow trucks. I also climbed the grapevine on I5 on my way to Southern Cal and the pathfinder did great. However there was no stuff in the trailer as it was new. I am taking it on its maiden camp trip the last week of Aril to the coast. If all does well with 2 adults a child the dog and all the "stuff" loaded in the trailer and SUV, then the big trip is on for June. 16 Days of Eastern Sierras are planned. Some night off grid and some with full hookups.

Your right. I did not include her in the Pod weighin. We do include her in all of our travels, however, she travels in the car. Safe Travels.

The variable you haven't mentioned is that your dog only weights 12lb.

You don't get a choice. It came with the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). It works just fine. Very smooth. Now, we just got the car and it only has about 600 miles. I did tow the Pod yesterday to have a WDH installed. No problem. Pulled just fine. I did do a lot of research on this vehicle before I purchased it. Almost every writeup gave it glowing comments. The transmission is continuously variable so you don't feel any shifts at all, and it has been sold overseas for many years. The Nissan brand had some problems in the early 2000-2005 models but all seems to be taken care of now. But I dare say almost every brand has had its problems recently. In any event, just took some friends out to dinner tonight and it is very smooth and quiet on the freeway. Six hundred miles does not give any indication of where it will be performing a 100,000 miles from now. I will give a recap of our summer travels near the end of the year. We are scheduled to travel to Boise Idaho for the Basque Festival which only occurs every 5 years. Basques from all over the world convene in Boise for 4 days. Although not a long pull for us, it will give us some idea of trailering with this TV. Other trips scheduled so far, are more local. Ask any other questions you may have. Overall am very satisfied with the Pathfinder and certainly would recommend it to others. Safe Travels.

Bob, did you get the CVT tranny? I'm real interested in hearing how it performs. Thanks in advance!

Ah. The 171 delivered from the factory is one of the lightest versions. However, I did weigh ours a couple of years ago with all our "stuff." With about 10 gallons of water, dual 5 gal. LP tanks and a size 27 gel battery we weighed in at about 2,800#. The still talk about your days in Beaverton. Why did you ever leave paradise? Safe Travels.
