yes, we added an additional pair and kept the originals.  the originals are fine.  It was just a problem when we carried our bikes on the rear-the lights were partially blocked. we now have 4 brake lights.  the new pair is approximately 30" above the bottom of the pod.  this puts the electrical connections at the very highest point inside the kitchen base cabinets.  we simply spliced the new wires to the existing brake light wiring-same colors on the new replacement lights as the originals(red, black and white). The hardest part was getting the nerve to cut a 1 1/2" hole in the pod.
This mod was done on our "new to us" 179.  we did the same thing in our previous 173.  You can see the mod in our page below.

I ordered exact replacement taillights from etrailer for about $16 each.  I added an extra set higher than the originals because our bikes partially blocked the original lights,

Had a similar intermittent problem with my 2015 179 - right LED taillight.  My TV ('17 F150) kept telling me I had a bad taillight on the trailer but it was intermittent so it took me awhile to actually 'see' the problem when hooked up.  Removed it and wired it to a spare battery and after some time it confirmed the taillight itself was bad.  An easy replacement for about $40.

Greetings
I had the same problem and found a gob of mastic stuck to the back of the light causing the board to overheat and fail.  You need to order new tail lights and use good quality silicon to seal around them.

I've seen some solder joints on these types of boards break.  Sometimes you can find them by powering the light and tapping on the solder joints. Then just re-solder them.

running lights work fine. but brake and signal very very faint.. so strange. all the wiring seems fine, and it even works perfect once in a while.. i think it may be the light itself.. i even jumped it to 12v and ground.. got bright and worked but always on... what do you think.. its just over 1.5 years old 2017 171
Probably a loose or corroded connection. High resistance can cause this kind of problem. Since it is only the right side, it's probably either right at the light, or where the right & left are connected together near the front.
