I went to the jeep dealer and recieved some good advice. Just buy roof rack at $300 and keep the tire up there. I ended up putting the tire in the back of the jeep. No cost.

At one time the bumper carried a warning label stating 150#, but that was right at the hitch. The further away from the hitch the lower that number gets. The real killer is the long lever arm and the dynamic loading caused by bouncing down the road over dips and bumps. The hitch is pretty much at its limit with two bikes OR the spare, not both. FR will not stand behind any bike rack except their recommended light weight rack. While that may contain a dose of marketing, it does point to a limit on the hitch.

Just curious, seems like the existing welds on the tire bracket are strong. Wonder how much weight I can carry with my bikes and tire on the back of my Rpod 178?

Asking for trouble. Too much torque, especially dynamic, on the receiver and bumper. Move the spare to the tongue and use a light weight bike rack or carry the bikes behind the TV.

I want to add a bike rack on the back of my 2016 R178 behind the spare tire using a 125 inch tubing. I plan to weld the tubing to the underside of the tire rack with is also 1.25 inch metal. Any comments?
