The truck is in kinda rough shape, but it still runs.  The guys at work were laughing because I made a big deal how i had gone 15 months w/o running over and killing a deer. That is the longest I have ever gone since owning the truck in 1998.   Not a good thing!  2 days later on my way to work, BAM, hit her pretty good, knocked her down, but she got back up and sauntered off into the field.  I was only going 35 mph, still in 3rd gear (stick shift) so it wasn't a high speed impact, nevertheless, she did leave some of her fur on the grill and bumper. Oh, and by the way, it doesn't count.  We only count the ones that are "brown and down."

Indeed, I have on a couple occasions used our 1994 F-150.  It also has the 5.0 L V-8, stick shift, 309,000 miles and 31 deer kills.  Mileage, 12 mpg.  Both our Explorers, '08 and '13, average is 12 to 12.5 mpg.  Go and enjoy.  Be thankful we aren't having prices like we did in 2014.  On our way to RMNP we often paid 4.29/gallon in the midwest and Colorado.

I use an 09 F150 5.4L for our 179; more than adequate power (using the tow/haul button), but uses more fuel- 10-13 mpg

I tow my 179 with a Dodge 3500 1 Ton Mega Cab.  Not towing I get about 13 mpg, towing the 179 I get the same thing.  The only difference is the speed I drive.  Not towing I average 70 mph and towing 60 mph.

Why do I use such a big truck?  Because I also, tow my 39 foot Montana 5th wheel with it.

We tow our 179 with a Ram 1500 with the 5.7 liter Hemi. We are towing in the flatter parts of eastern NC and are usually seeing 13-14 Mpg.
