Topic: Vodka in fresh tank? Posted: 26 Oct 2017 at 6:32am |
Camping this weekend in eastern NE, weather forecasts indicate temps dipping down as low as 25F overnight but back above freezing during the day. I don't think I'll have issues with tanks or lines freezing but found an odd tip when googling the issue. I've found several "posts" on other forums suggesting that vodka added to the fresh tank will keep it from freezing in moderate conditions. While this would make emptying the fresh tank at end of camp more interesting, I doubt it would work unless the ration of vodka/water was pretty high. Anyone here of this, or have a suggestion? I'll use rv antifreeze in the grey and black tanks. I could also leave the fresh empty but would like the convenience of having use of the sink.
Thoughts?

You'll be okay to 25° as long as it warms up in the morning.
Yeah, I don't know how much vodka it would take to have a significant effect on freezing, and it might be bad for seals and things.

A full fresh tank is not freezing overnight at 25F. It takes a LONG time to freeze 30 gallons. A person could place some insulation around the couple feet of exposed water line, from the holding tank to Pod floor entrance.

It might take considerably longer to freeze 30 gallons of vodka though.
From a cost/benefit perspective there would be additional considerations.

Everclear will get you to a substantial ratio much more quickly.

Six gallons of Ever clear will get you down to 0F. By putting it in your water tank.
A couple shots of that stuff and you won't feel the cold, or much else.
