I really want to ask the group a question about campground security. I go to painful lengths to lock up everything, including the grill. Am I just being paranoid or, have any of you guys had anything stolen while camping...thanks in advance....

We have never had anything stolen while camping. I leave my fishing cart, rods, tackle box, bikes, grill, and all kinds of thing out at our site and have never had a problem.

We had a spare tire cover go missing at a lunch stop.  I believe the thief wanted the spare tire, and found the cable lock (to the bumper) daunting.  'Course, could be they just wanted a spare tire cover.  Still, I changed all my cylinder locks and keep everything locked down.  Y'never know when a Hobbit will take a shine to your bit of kit!Big smile

Never had anything stolen however when camping in Whitehorse the owners warned me to keep everything hidden as locals often strolled into the campground and liberated items.

Thanks everyone, I think I will lower my ThreatCon a bit. I still keep things totally locked down during transport.

Never had anything liberated. Then again I like to lock everything up and out of sight. Keep the honest people honest. Not much you can do about a determined thief but try to discourage would be thief.

To me it's a matter of not creating irresistible temptations for others.  Stuff that is not especially valuable or easily sold, and/or awkward or inconvenient to cart away, I don't worry so much about.  So most low value camping stuff, our little barbecue grill, and such, I leave unlocked.  If someone walks off with it, it's no big loss.  On the other hand, for things like my house batteries and propane tank I have them protected with a chain and padlocks to make it a little more inconvenient for the snatch and grab thief.  The spare propane tank and my 2 five gallon fuel cans I keep locked in the camper shell of my truck.

The overwhelming majority of people who camp in campgrounds are honest folks and theft is generally not a problem.  On the other hand, as we descend into a world of opioid and methamphetamine addictions, especially in rural areas, theft is going to be an ever increasing issue.

I recently was talking with my daughter, who is an official with the Girl Scouts.  They had to close a summer camp last year because there were so many crackheads and opium fiends wandering through the camp at all hours, day and night.  And this was in a mountain resort area, far from urban centers.  I have to confess, I was shocked to hear that in this relatively remote area there were so many drug addicts.
Never leave footprints behind.

Fortunately I have never had anything stolen. I don’t lock everything up but I don’t leave a lot of stuff in plain view.
I also play the radio on the outside speakers at low volume when gone to give the impression that someone may be in the pod.

We have never had an issue or real concern. Some of that we attribute to Henry, our ever vigilant guard cat!
