Topic: bike racks on 178s Posted: 05 May 2018 at 1:07pm |
I've been checking sites, here and onlline-seeing conflicting/dated info. What is the latest on carrying bikes, removing the tire and mount, and adding rack with bikes? One post from FR said you should not have more that ~62 lbs counting the tire and mount - Our tire is 547 annd mount is 10, so we were already over?? In addition, those racks that go over propane tank look like they would be difficult to get bikes on and off? Any suggestions? We really want to take our bikes, and we're pulling the rpod with a 2017 Toyota 4 runner.

We have a rack on the front over the tanks and its not too hard to get the bikes loaded (it helps that I'm tall - my 5'2" wife can't).

We got it 3-4 yrs ago from a Canadian company called racksforcars.com. Brand was Arvika; not cheap, around $500 or so Canadian $$ plus shipping. Call them, they were helpful when I was searching.

You might check the Jack It by Lippert, mounts over the jack on the tongue, price is around 200. Like other front carriers they are up pretty high and it is best a 2 person operation when loading and unloading. We got one last year and it works really well once loaded, can also take off the top half easily should you not be bringing bikes with you on your trip.

My suggestion is getting a BAL under mount spare tire carrier and just put a regular bike rack on the back which is what I did. You can see it in my mods link at the bottom of this post. I did do a little bit of welding around the mount where the receiver is and at the ends where it attaches to the frame just to strengthen a tad and I've had no problems.
