Topic: Hot Trailer Connection? Posted: 06 Jun 2018 at 9:28am |
Is it important/ valuable to have an always hot battery connection from the TV?
I just got a new vehicle and the battery connection is only hot when the ignition is on.

No. You actually want it that way. That way, in case your pod sits for a while hooked up, it can ONLY drain it's own battery, and not your starting battery too..

Thanks furpod. On my last vehicle I had the hitch and harness installed aftermarket and I'm not sure why the guy did it that way. My new rig has it all factory installed.

It's easier. They'd have to tie it into the ignition to do it the "right" way, which takes more work.

My 2011 Silverado has a hot plug with the ignition off....factory installed. Got to remember to disconnect plug if sitting for a period of time.

Our F-150 does disconnect with a timer after the ignition is off. I think I like it this way.

I installed the wiring in my truck for the bake controller and trailer plug and it is hot all the time. Had to get a jump one morning when we pulled over and ran the heater all night. Never thought about it.....now I know to disconnect the plug if it is going to be parked for even overnight.

What's hot and where, it's not your brake controller. 12V from your trailer to TV can be present, that's the charge line from TV to TT.

You could add a relay.

OK, but it should be wired to a switchable source not a constant HOT. Right?
