Just had the wheel bearings repacked, and now I do not have TT brakes. Factory controller says everything is connected, and all lights work.I know the shop that I took it to gor the repack is going to say they did not cause this problem. Is there some simple test I can do myself. Thanks

Have them check the wires that go to the brake hubs.

How do you know the brakes aren't working? The controller sends a signal to the brake magnets and that is how it knows the brakes are connected. It could be the brakes are adjusted to far from the drums, which is how they made removal of drums easy. When they put the drum back on they didn't adjust the shoes out. Therefor the shoes can't touch the drums. The controller would indicate normal, but brakes wouldn't work.

I thought about that. I asked the mechanic if he had to adjust the shoes to get the drum off, and he said no. I can hear the magnets clicking and I think that I felt a slight amount of braking when I set the controller as high as it went. (10). I have an appointment at the same shop tomorrow. I will ask that question again. I hope you are right. Thanks Mike, for the input.

The magnets clicking is a good sign the wiring is good. Let us know.

Good Morning....Took the Pod back, and the shop took the wheels off. Could not find anything wrong, and said the magnets were working. Still no brakes. Got an appointment at a trailer (only) repair for Tuesday.

Oh man, if the magnetics are working there is a brake control voltage. Interested in what trailer shop says but this is not a complicated system. When energized the brake shoes have to contact hub. If not the shoes need to be adjusted out and then the self adjusters will maintain.

Is there a certain amount of electricity required. Like a full 12 volts. The first shop mech said he could not tell if the magnet actually moved [sic].

The amount of voltage applied is determined by the gain of the brake controller. At the maximum setting it should be close to the 12V supply. Most wiring is standard 12V in on black wire , brake voltage out on blue wire. Now I'm wondering how mech checked. Did he use brake controller or did he use jumper and apply 12V to blue wire at the 7 position on trailer 7 pin. Here's why I'm asking the brake controller is proportional, it's looking for movement, not a stationary trailer, so using the brake controller on a stationary trailer doesn't test right. So your trailer guy should check the controller wiring, RED wire, BLACK wire and Blue wire, all good - move back. Then I would use 12V right on trailer brake line while watching magnets, they will not move far, just enough to apply contact to hub. They make a caliper gauge for drum brakes that measures the diameter of hub on outside and correlates that to what the inside diameter of brakes shoes are to ensure the shoes are close to the hub diameter. Every drum brake guy knows that:) Sorry for lengthy reply but not rocket science. Good luck with a trailer guy.

Since this happened after the wheel bearings were packed, I'm thinking something was not re-assembled correctly. I would, for sure, check that 12V applied to each of the brakes engages the drum and also prevents it from turning. If that is not the case, then your task is to figure out what got missed on re-assembly.
