I just went to my local Brandsmart and was dismayed to find that the new Pioneer speakers I bought that have a 3" depth will not fit in the ceiling opening!  The allowable space is about 1.5"

As far as I know, improved sound for speakers like this are pretty much in direct correlation to the size of the magnet and the depth of excursion of the woofer.

Has anyone found speakers that are a big improvement that would fit a 1.5" depth?

Thanks

I replaced my 2016 178 speakers with some Pioneer's and I think they sound much better. Others say you need an amp, and not just speakers but I think the pioneers have a much better/deeper/richer sound.

I beefed up the installation with speaker "spacers" and I used the 1" wall anchors.  This made the mount larger in diameter than the original speakers and fresh holes.  The spacers also increase the depth.  HTH.

Hollow Wall Anchors from Home Depot. SKU: 121 206, #6-32 x 1 in., which I purchased from advice on this forum.

I took a look on the Crutchfield website and there are several speakers with 1-13/16" top mount depth. It just means that the grille will hang down a fraction of an inch lower.

Thanks RockyMtn.

I bought the spacer pairs for $6 at Best Buy today.  Made by Metra

I need to file them out a bit as the Pioneer speakers basket diameter is just a smidgen wider, but they will work.

The OEM speakers are complete, utter crap.  The Furrion head unit is spec'd for 20 watts/channel so I figure it can drive the speakers pretty well considering the small cabin.  Any sub worth anything is going to need to take up room, and that is in very short supply

I've been shopping power amps and subs, but I'm going to give a listen to the upgraded speakers and then decide.  My gut says they'll be as good as needed

Greetings
I made spacers out of 3/4 inch plywood, painted them white and mounted better speakers.  Looks good.

TS-D65F

They were about $79 for the pair.  They don't have a grill, but the 1" tweeter suspended over the woofer looks very cool.  I suppose they are designed to be mounted behind a car door panel with a built in grill.

I liked the way they sounded in the store, decent bass and very good mid and hi end.

Pioneer 560 I believe on sale at Best Buy for $25!! 300 watts. Just waiting for spacers I ordered online as depth of new speaker a bit taller than opening allows. Now what to do with equally deplorable outdoor speakers. Anyone have a plug and play replacement? I dont want to cut new holes.
