I'm sure many of you already know this trick but I'm new to awnings since our Pod had the little eyebrow and our Sonoma has one of them fancy schmancy electric awnings. I was worried that our NV desert sun would turn the awning material into feathers and rags so I fashioned a cover for it. I got a piece of 4" dia. 10' long corrugated smooth plastic drain pipe form Big Box Hardware and Building Supply for $10. I cut a strip out of it lengthwise of about 3" and it snaps right over the rolled up awning and completely protects it from the sun.
I'm not so sure I'd travel with it since it might blow off, though I'll be looking into some way to fasten it down securely. But, even if I only use it at home, it will keep the sun off a great deal of the time.
