I had the joy of finding an old chicken breast in the refrigerator freezer 10 days after it was turned off.  I've tried all the Google suggestions for disinfecting a refrig from bleach and vinegar to mouthwash.  The smell is slowly getting better, but I think some of the chicken juices drained behind the lower cooling flanges in the back of the refrig (traces going the top of the flanges and traces coming out below the flanges).  The flanges seem to be held in place by accessible screws.  Can I carefully remove the flange assembly and clean behind or is this only going to make a bad situation worse?
Hate to pay $1,000+ for an new refrigerator just because of stupidity.

Yes, you can.  I did that a few years ago, only because I am OCD and wanted to see what was behind the flange.  All I found was some dustEmbarrassed.  Anyway, be careful and you will be good to go.  After that is complete and you disinfect behind that flange try some baking soda on a sheet and close fridge for a couple days, this may also help "rid" your fridge of that nasty odor.

Thank you for your quick replies.  I removed the fins from the back of the refrigerator.  I found some traces of my chicken drippage and removed them with clorox.  Now working on removing the smell from the interior of the frige: baking soda, vinegar, etc.

You might try lemon juice as a deodorant. It gets the smell of onions off my hands very well.
