Hello,

Would anyone that owns a 195/196 know the opening height of the larger storage opening? Since I have an SUV for a tow vehicle, I would like to know if there is any chance of storing a generator in the compartment. The generator I'm looking at is just over 18" in height. We are about a month out on receiving our 196 and starting to do some planning, and there are no 195/196 models in the area for me to measure.

Thanks!

Our 195 is in the shop, but I'm thinking that the generator will need to be tilted to go in but may well stand up once inside the opening (I'd give it a 50/50 chance).

Looking forward to verification from someone who can actually get at their 195/6...

I measured both sides. The widest one (slide out side) measures approx 12.500 x 26. The other side (door side) measures about 10.500 x 34.  I haven't tried it, but it looks like my honda gennys would fit in laying on their side. Once you get past the door, the space is about 16 - 17.500 inches high, depending on where you measure. If you have a honda, and place it just right, It might stand upright between the upper slats. I might consider carrying mine in there now, when I need to. Thanks for the question.

Thanks, really appreciate the info!

Not as large as I had hoped for, but maybe you are correct about a Honda or similar suitcase type generator going in sideways and then standing it up.

Thanks again!

Is it ok to transport such generators on their side?  I honestly don't know.

I would think not, but I don't believe that is what he is trying to say. Turn it on it's side just long enough to get it through the opening, then once inside the compartment, stand it up.

I don't think it will work to lay the geny on it's side, you may get it in but I don't think you have enough head room to stand the geny up. I had that problem when built my hot water heating system, I got the unit in on it's side but could not stand it up. Plan B. I took off the paneling  at the rear of the dinette, slid the unit in and closed it up again. Now I don't know if this would work on your model. Cut a hole in the paneling big enough to slide the geny in and put a door in front. I myself carry my geny in a compartment I added to the pod.
If you want something done right, do it yourself.
