Hello Goldenbrewster,
I agree with Offgrid. Unless you want to see your generator bouncing down the highway after you hit a bump or you are willing to risk significant damage to the rear of your RPod or bending of the frame at the axle, DON'T! The RPod is not made to carry that kind of weight back there. Something very light might be okay, but generators large enough to be of use to run the AC are not light. You don't mention what model RPod but I believe the principle is the same no matter which one. Mounting one on a Stromberg-Carlsen Trailer Tray on the A frame or carrying it in the back of your tow vehicle is a much better option.

Let me know when you do this. I will follow behind at a distance, hopefully picking up what is left of the generator after skidding along the highway at 60+ mph.

In preparation for a trip across the country, I got a tray type bike carrier to mount to a bolt on receiver mounted to the bumper. It had a short bar that went into the receiver, so I figured it'd minimize the leverage working against the bumper and amplifying the bumps. Wrong! It was too short and the inside bike couldn't clear the spare tire, but the bikes were still going to bounce around like a bobble head doll. I sent it back to Amazon for a refund.
So when we headed out for the opposite coast I put the generator in the back of the truck and managed to fit the bikes inside the space behind the front seats in our crew cab. Passing over I-80 in Indiana would have knocked the bikes off for sure. What a disaster of a road and with a $20 toll. It was a miracle that the spare tire didn't fall off.

We've been on a lot of, lets just say, less than optimal roads. In fact, some of them were terrible. I think that contributed to the bent axle I experienced. Now that I have the reinforcement on the axle, I feel better about the travel. I know we will encounter more such roads.
I tried a rack on the back, but it held lightweight items. The heaviest was a propane cylinder. When we got the Frontier, the rack went to our younger daughter to use with her car and the spare went to the back of the RPod again. After that experience, I definitely do not recommend putting a rack on the back of any of the RPod models. |
