Topic: Slide topper bracket pulled off Posted: 05 Jun 2024 at 6:50pm |
We have a 2022 Rp202 with factory installed slide topper brackets. Came home from an outing yesterday and when my wife went to run the slide out, there was a loud thud. She stopped and we went to the side to see what the noise was. The front slide topper bracket had come totally off, pulled screws clear out and was on top of the slide out. We bought this unit as a new unit on 6/22/2023. Would this be a warranty claim?

Yes it should be from what you are indicating. Get in touch with the dealer that you purchased the unit from and start from there. Good luck.

Well my dealer says Forest River denied warranty claim due to topper not being installed by dealer. So I reinstalled the brackets using larger screws and heavy duty double faced mounting tape. I used the existing screw holes and with bigger diameter screws they really didn't tighten. Any case I reattached the topper and everything was good. It operated fine. Set up at campground yesterday afternoon and when I extended the slide, it made a terrible noise. Went outside and found the screws holding the brackets had partially pulled out, and the topper had dropped down hitting the flange, hence the noise. Anyone know why the screws are not holding?

Are you referring to an awning that is mounted over the slide out and covers the slide out when extended? This awning is to prevent debris from collecting on the top of the slide out like leaves and small sticks. If that is what you're referring to, I believe that is an "after market" improvement, most likely done by the RV retailer. Whom ever installed it should be responsible for the repair. Hope this helps.

In reality, what is needed is a backing plate with machine screws, washers, and nylock nuts or regular nuts with lock washers. There is a lot of stress on the bracket mounts, more so if the tension on the spring for the topper retracting is too tight. Think of a window shade. It needs enough tension to wind the topper fabric. But too much tension can make it hard for the roll to unspool while you are extending it. I hope you can figure out the cause of this happening. Let us know what you find out and how you get it fixed.
