Calendar Event: Ocean Mesa, CA Posted: 08 Apr 2013 at 11:30pm |
Located just above Santa Barbara, CA. Close to Solvang and Carpinteria, great base for seeing area. You're sitting on a hill overlooking El Capitan State Beach. Clean and well run facility, tents to big rigs. If you are in the central coast area of California it's a must stop. Nice pool and great hiking.

I can't seak for the campground, but the area is spectacular. I haven't been there for a few years, but I grew up in Summerland (between Carpineria and Santa Barbara) and was stationed at Vandenberg AFB near Lompoc (fairly close to Solvang and Buelton). I love the area but we couldn't afford to live there. When we finally retire I see a trip west all the way to the coast, and this may be a place to stay for a while. We also loved Pismo Beach and Morro Bay, both of which are up the coast a ways.

Carpinteria SB is so popular now that it is almost impossible to get a reservation most of the year.Jalama Beach County Park, just south of Lompoc is right on the beach, they have cabins now, too. Flying flags in Buelton is also real nice. The Chumash Indian Casino in Solvang is a big draw now, and they are buying up the town. Only visited Lompoc a couple of times, still small and quiet. Took the road to the coast AMTRAK station by Vandenberg AFB, wow, that's in the middle of nowhere. Checked out new development in Carpinteria this past week, high prices just getting higher. Kevin Costner lives there now, beach front place.

Things have changed. Is Pea Soup Anderson's still in Buelton?
I went to high school in Carpinteria, and last time there where my friends had lived were condos that no working person could afford. And many of those who were working in Santa Barbara were living in Lompoc. While I would love to visit I can no longer live there.

Absolutly, Andersons is still there, but I think it is the only one left. Not as famous or crowded as before. Food is still very good.
Your old high school is still there, more kids I'm sure. During the summer Carpinteria is wall to wall people, mostly vacationers. It is a very have and have not city. Big avocado festival each year for three days, the place really jumps with three bands playing all day. Checked out a new development at south end of town on other side of freeway, association fees were already $159. with no cap on increase in future-too rich for my blood. I'm sure you would enjoy a trip back home.

I recall the Carpinteria State Beach Park entrance in the afternoon with campers lined up for blocks. Sites were assigned by lottery and often there were hundreds that waited and didn't get in. In high school many of us were fascinated by the girls that camped at the beach. Resort communities were fun!

No lottery or long lines anymore, if you haven't booked a site 6 months before you're out of luck. Couple of years ago they restructured the park camping sites to create more big rigs and full hookups. The ocean has washed away some parts of the campground but that is being fixed, the day use area is also changed. Now, I just hope for an early or off season spot. Ya, still lots of summer lady campers.

No lottery anymore, reservations 6 months in advance or out of luck. Off season even difficult, no waiting line, reservation or goodbye. When you visit you will be surprised at the changes.
