Topic: Wrong size refrigerator Posted: 10 Aug 2013 at 9:41am |
I was filling out warranty cards, using the Forest River equipment sheet for the model and serial number.
The model number on the sheet is RM 8501, I checked the refrigerator and that is what is installed. The manual from Dometic said this is a 3.74 cu. ft model. All of r pod info tells me it should be a 4.1 cu. ft unit. That would be either RM8551 or RM8555. I have asked my dealer to check this out and have left a message at FR to please call me back with an explanation. What do you guys have in your rigs? Thanks Allen

My 2013 RP-172 has the Dometic 8501, both on the equipment sheet and in physical fact. The label on the 8501 says 96/102.1 liters which converts to about 3.6 cu. ft. I think the FR advertised 4.2 cu. ft. is either from some old Dometic literature or a bit of FR fudging. A 2008 Dometic manual lists the capacity as 106L, but a 2010 manual shows 96L (3.4 cu ft). The Dometic is a bit confusing and inconsistent.

Just got a call from FR cust service. He told me during a production run of R Pods Dometic was unable to supply them with the 4.2 cu ft refrigerator, so they substituted the smaller unit.
I guess they can just do that type of thing. Allen

Ours is an 8501, and that was from a 2011 model. I've not seen much mention of any model numbers aside from the 8501 over the years.
I'm sure they are out there though.

No, they can't, unless they state in their ads, literature or on their web site that "Specification are subject to change" or similar language. Bob |

I don't see anything on their web site, but I did find this in the brochure you can download from the web site. "All specifications contained herein are based on the latest product information at time of printing. Forest River reserves the right |

The question is does the difference in size have a major negative impact on your ability to enjoy the Pod. If yes then have a discussion with FR about it. Be prepared for them to tell you to have a nice day due to the posted language. Then you have choices. You can enjoy the camper for what it is, or you can sell it and go another direction.

Personal opinion, but I can't ever imagine the words "buyer beware" being attached to anything associated with the Surveyor/R-pod plant or a single Pod that has ever rolled out of there. Others will disagree and that is fine, I just hate to see a new owner not digging their Pod.
I follow Keith's train of thought. If it weren't a reasonable substitution in part numbers I could see an issue with this. But hey this is just me, the 8501 fits in the space, and it keeps my food and drinks cold. That's good enough for me.
