Topic: WDH Safety Posted: 05 Mar 2014 at 10:48am |
I recently purchased a WDH for my TV. I was wondering how many folks use a safety brake cable and/or safety chains on their tow setup? If so, what kind of breakaway kit do you use and what configuration do you set up the chains? Thanks.

we use 2 safety chains from the R Pod frame to the TV frame mounted hitch receiver. we cross the chains under the r pod so that if the pod comes off the ball, the pod will not fall to the pavement. we also use a cable that connects the electric run away brake switch to the safety chains.

Your pod WILL have the breakaway and chains installed.

Good advice, but one minor correction. The cable for the break-away switch should not be attached to the safety chains. It should be attached to a permanent part of the receiver itself. It will do no good if attached to one of the safety chains. Bob

Dumb question. Where do you attach the break-away cable? I have nowhere to connect it to the hitch. Any suggestions?

The best place is somewhere on the TV that is NOT part of the receiver hitch. In very rare situations an improperly installed, or old rusty receiver can drop off of the TV. I've seen articles on it happening. However, you probably have a better chance of winning the lottery so most people just attach the breakaway cable to the loops on the receiver where the chains are attached.

I attach mine separately in one of the holes (either left side or right side of the receiver tube) where you connect the safety chains. Just make sure you fasten it separately, not to one of the safety chains.
