Topic: Spare tire carrier idea Posted: 09 Mar 2014 at 1:45pm |
Has anyone looked at using a spare tire carrier winch type setup from a pickup truck under the back of their pod? I realize that some type of crossmember would probably have to be mounted to the pod frame.
I have been brainstorming on how to free up the space for the bike rack & still carry the spare cleanly. Plus looking at the structure that holds the spare tire/bike rack kinda scares me. I'm gonna have to brace that a bit for peace of mind. |

It's been done (more or less) under the tongue. Airstreams carry their spare under the front of the trailer, on ours its on the street side, may be enough room on the pod to do something similar. On our 177, there is room under the front center area to pull or lock a spare up into, forward of the black tank. The 'stream doesn't winch up like a truck, but has a lifting rack sort of deal, its not ideal for getting the spare on and off, but it does store it out of the way, and just about as high as possible, where, hopefully it never has to be used from..lol.

After giving the pods a quick peek under the back, I think the spare will fit between the framerails, forward of the hitch where the bike rack (and spare now) mounts. I want to get the tire as high as possible for ground clearance. Plus I want it out of the way. After we pick our 178 up on the 22nd, that is going to be my first mod. Like Jeeps(which we have 4) you can never leave well enough alone.

You are going to make a fine podmodder.

We attached the spare to the tongue. There was a thread on here that showed it. Have to get an extender so there is room for dual battery and dual propane tank (if you have that). Works well, but I would get a cover for the tire.
