Topic: sway bar mounting advice Posted: 18 Oct 2014 at 10:09am |
Hi,
we recently purchased an R-pod 172 an got the Curt 17200 sway bar and need advise from someone who may have used this model of bar. My question is when mounting on the tongue, the screw holes for the sway bar seem very close to the edge of the tongue frame. Is it safe to go ahead and drill these in or does it need to be welded to the tongue? The tongue frame is not very wide and about the same width as the bracket that needs to be mounted. I need to get a different sway bar bracket welded to the hitch anyway and would like to do it all at once if necessary. Advise and especially some close up pictures of how yours is mounted would be very appreciated!
Thanks!
Dean

Wow! That bracket is definitely narrower than mine or Forest River has increased the width of the tongue. The screw holes on my bracket are right on edges of the frame. Is that a Curt bracket and sway bar?

The mounting bracket is exactly 6" x 3" . The sway controller itself is a China made generic. Probably cost about $40. I was charged $80 installed.

I also wonder if your sway controller is meant for larger trailers with higher tongue weights. Also the pod has smaller square frame rails than larger trailers.

Hmm... My bracket is also 3" exactly. In your picture you can clearly see that the bracket has maybe a quarter inch clearance above and below it relative to the tongue frame. The edge of my bracket lines up perfectly with the edge of the tongue which puts the screw holes dangerously close to the edge of the tongue. I am seriously wondering if Forest River widened the tongue a half an inch or so on newer pods.Might have to do a weld. 😞 Didn't want do that.

How is the spare tire attached? Is it homemade or did you buy it?
It looks great

It's a SWAGMAN 2 inch RV bumper mount receiver, bolted around the A-Frame using the U-Bolts. I then bought a 2 inch to 1-1/4" receiver adapter to mount the original spare tire carrier into it securely. All told about $65 to get the spare tire mounted to the A-Frame with no custom welding or fabricating, and I can put it back when it's time to sell the Pod.
I currently use my 1UP USA bike rack in the rear 1-1/4" receiver of the R-Pod. So far this year no issues.
