Just ordered a 172 and ventilation is my big concern.  Thanks for posting this.  Gonna go for a while without modifying just to see what we really want.

We added a vertical slider in the door a few years ago, that made a huge difference all by itself.

Here's the gory details on how to alter the supplied trim rings:

Well crud...I was prepping to do this mod in the spring, but it looks like Scamp no longer sells this window. http://www.scamptrailers.com/parts-store-cat-view/windows.html Going to do some hunting on the net to see if anywhere else has them. Has anyone else done a bunk window mod using other Windows that is a simpler install?

Looks like the window is 11" high vs the 8" I installed and the center part only cranks out. Looking around on the manufacturer's (Hehr) website it says that a variety of installation rings is available. It might be worth a call to see if they can provide you with one for the right wall thickness and avoid all the crap I went through.

That window would still be a good option for a crankout IMHO although it's pricier than the one I installed. I specifically wanted a crankout, but if you were willing to go to a slider then you'd have more options in a smaller window.

I specifically avoided windows with crank handles like a household casement window because I thought they would stick out too far. I was a little concerned about these window crank star knob things being a head-knocker but that hasn't been an issue.

One thing I do try to be careful about is not letting the bottom bunk mattress whack the window knob every time you open the storage compartment. I can see that eventually causing some damage if you let it happen over and over.

Excellent job Mark!  Looking forward to seeing it live and up close next month in Traverse City.  Hopefully there won't be any snow falling then as it is spitting a few pellets right now.
