Topic: Tire or axle noise Posted: 10 Jul 2016 at 4:05pm |
I have a 179 about a year old. It has the standard mud tires. Lately I've noticed a kind of droning noise coming from the trailer at speeds over 50 MPH. Not sure how long the noise has existed, but I just got back from a trip from San Diego to Utah and back and I noticed it on this trip.
Could the mud tires be making that droning noise? I know they do on jeeps and trucks, so why not a trailer. Last year I had the dealer repack the wheel bearings. Maybe he did it incorrectly and what I hear are the bearings? Thoughts? Thanks!

Tire noise seems very plausible to me. It's unlikely the dealership jacked up the bearing service, but I'm sure it happens. If that is true you should notice some excessive heat on the trailer hubs.

I'm heading out on another trip in a week, so I'll watch for excessive heat. Thanks for the reply.

My 177 came with Nankang Mudstar tires and depending on the road surface would sing. If the windows of my truck are open and no wind blowing I could hear the tires. I now have B.F. Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 and they are much quieter.

I just returned from a 1,200 mile trip around the Sierras. The noise has increased, and I now notice that the tires are not wearing evenly. In other words, some of the knobs are almost worn down, while others are still all there. What could cause that? Cheap tire? The tires only have about 6,000 miles on them.
Any recommendations for new tires? Thanks! |

The original tires are not balanced and mine did the same thing. When I got new tires installed that were balanced it made a big difference. Another problem is the trailer axle don't have shock absorbers to smooth out the bumps.

Any suggestions on tire replacement? There's a Discount Tire a few blocks from where I live and found these tires there: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/searchTiresBySize.do?fl=&sortBy=prca&r=CASINT%7Cpc%7C92117&ar=75&fqs=true&rd=15&cs=235

I ended up getting two of these:
Much quieter than the original. Don't even hear them!
