what anode rod does everyone use? aluminum or magnesium ?

That is a good question. Whatever came as standard equipment on my 2011 model 177 is the same anode I continue to use. Still is great condition.

Either is fine. I forget the difference. I think one is better for hard water. But if you find one that fits you're good.

As I understand, aluminum is less reactive than magnesium. Less reactive means longer life but lesser protection. Aluminum would last longer in corrosive water conditions, but would offer less protection in less corrosive water. If changing the rod doesn't bother you I would use magnesium. Just keep an eye on it every couple of years until you get a calibration on its life span.

I believe that Suburban recommends using the Magnesium anode rod unless one is in a place with very corrosive water. In that case, Suburban says to use the Aluminum anode rod. One does run the risk that the aluminum anode rod will not provide adequate protection. However, if the magnesium one is corroded away, you end up with no protection.

replaced the rod this spring it is about 1/2 gone will replace it this spring. water here is hard if you want a drink takes a hammer and ice pick to get one then you chew it

Neither magnesium nor aluminum are recommended for the ice pick. High strength carbon steel is preferred, but rust can be a problem. Check it each year.  |
