I really wasn't well oriented to cleaning the black tank when we got our R-pod.

Looking down the toilet, the 171 has a slight 'dog leg' to the actual tank. 

1. Does the 'straight wand' clean the tank ok, or is it necessary to get a flexible wand?

2. How much 'blow back' of water do you get when using a wand in the black tank? 

If this is a problem, I could see making a shield from light plexiglass to fit over the toilet opening with a small central hole for the wand. This would also help a little in containing odor(?).


Am  I over-thinking this???

I think so. I have a flexible wand. The wand is inserted beyond the toilet valve, the head rotates at a right angle, water is not coming up if the wand is below the toilet valve. I used mine numerous times. Never had water in the latrine.

Have you tried using the black tank flush built into the Pod? It's on the side of the trailer opposite the dump valves.

A sad story, the valve was installed incorrectly at the factory and I didn't learn it's use until after the warranty  period expired. I 'fixed it' - a story in itself, but 'stuff' had dried and plugged the spray unit. 

I've had enough personal experience with black tanks - another story in itself, and won't attempt a repair this side of an emergency. I do intend to see how much $$ an rv place will charge to fix it, but am pretty sure it's too expensive.

On my 177 it's very easy to remove the spray head from the tank. 3 screws hold it in place. The sprayer on my trailer got clogged so I pulled it out and cleaned it. Scrape the old pipe seal off they used to seal it and put new pipe seal on and screw it back on. It has been working great since. Make sure your tank is empty before removing the plate.
