Topic: Protecting our 2 new generators Posted: 30 Aug 2017 at 8:07pm |
Hope I am typing in correct place. We just purchased 2 Yamaha 2000 watt inverter generators with parallel cord. We were told to protect them from being stolen with a cable. Can anyone recommend a cable long enough and strong enough for us? Brand and possibly where to purchase. Thank You

I have been researching that also. The bike "cables" and chains are the locks that are cut the most often. The "U" locks are the safest (the thicker the better). My Firman Gen has a plastic handle so putting a U-Lock through it wouldn't offer much protection from a thief with a hacksaw so I made a metal angle-iron cover of the handle and I secure it with a U-lock in my pickup bed. It's the best you can do and nothing is secure. It all depends on how badly the thief wants it. Just make it as difficult as you reasonably can. Locks made out of 1/2" or more rod are the safest because most bolt cutters won't open far enough to cut them unless they are carrying around the 4' model of bolt cutter, and most thieves carry the 2' models because they are easy to conceal.

Home Depot has some options. I'm sure Amazon does too. I like to run the cable around the frame or through a wheel and then through the generator(s).

Lowes too. Plus 1 to Spydie, you can deter theft, not prevent it, make it difficult for a thief. I have used bicycle locks in past, that's why my bicycle was stolen.

What about the Masterlock Python Cable-lock series of locks.
Has anyone tried one to secure your gennie?

That's just a very cheap, inexpensive, small diameter cable that can be cut with the smallest bolt cutter. Really? An $18 cable securing your $500-$1500 generator? (they run about $18-$50 but are only a 3/8" cable.) way too small to secure anything. I'm not talking about securing from dedicated thieves. Nothing is impossible to steal. I'm talking about securing from everybody that has the small 24" bolt cutters that all bike thieves use. The Python looks no different from any other bike cable available at Walmart. But it would be better than a rope! LOL

A 4.5 inch battery-powered grinder can defeat most locks and cables.
