To seal it well, I might suggest that you use a "paintable" epoxy, or maybe a polyester resin typically used in fiberglass layups. A good example is something like West System epoxy that is used in boat building. It will soak into the fiber board and penetrate deeply enough to make the edge completely waterproof. We used West System for a couple of wooden kayaks I built, and it holds up really well.
