We think we want to make our own semi-sort-of awning. Our R-179 was built with the track used for the R-dome, and is not reinforced to use the factory awning. The R-dome itself is "too much", we just want a shaded area on the entry side of the pod (that is quick and easy to put up/take down).

However, I've never looked at an R-dome up close, so I'm not sure how it attaches to the side of the pod. I'm assuming there are some sort of buttons or other thing that is sewn into the edge of the R-dome. That's what we need. Does anyone know where we can get these thing(s)? As an alternative, if anyone has a torn/worn out R-dome, we would like to recover the track slider things.

Sail slugs, or keder tape. Those are the two most often sourced ways to mount a home made awning.

Aha! I found listings for both sail slugs and keder tape (as recommended by furpod) on www.Sailrite.com
They're my go-to source for such things as I own a Sailrite sewing machine.

I bought a REI Camp Tarp (12x12), two REI tarp poles, and made my own slider attachments with parachute cord and nylon spacers from Home Depot.  The Home Depot part is  1/2" x .194" x 1"

Or you could buy them:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tarp-Trackers-awning-hangers-Tent-Trailers-Pop-up-RV-motorhome-lights-hooks-/251934547549

What I made works for me.

How tight are those spacers? When we looked at our R-pod the other day, the keder rail for the R-dome "looked" like 1/2", but I didn't have a measuring stick, so I stuck my pinky finger in. Seems darn close to 1/2", but it could possibly be 7/16".

Poking around online, and keder standard sizes appear to be 8.5mm, 10mm, 11mm, 13mm, and 15mm (there are other smaller sizes). 11mm is "almost" 7/16 and 13mm is "almost" 1/2".

Does anyone know for sure what size the R-dome rail is?

The rail on the outside of the gutter above the slide-out appears to be 5/16" (AKA 8.5mm).

Older Pods have an inside of .40" (9-10mm). Newer models have the larger, .563" (14mm) inside diameter rail. A quick way to tell is if your rail appears to have an inside diameter larger than 1/2", you have the newer, larger rail.

We have an older(2009) model R Pod.  We just finished making a tarp and used sail slugs that were 7/16"-they worked fine.  I think they were labelled as 7.5mm also.  They came from Sail Rite company
here is the item we used

hope this helps

The reason I used 1/2" nylon spacers for my RPod tarp is that they fit the newer rail.

OK. Our's is a 2017, so it must be the 1/2" (+) rail.

Shopping around it looks like 1/2" keder is only available in bulk. Right now looking at 110 yard roll. Shocked

another option is to sew a length of rope or coed into a pocket sewn into the edge of the tarp/fly/fabric.
