Yes, Fred, there are a few of us who grew up with 6L6s, 5Y3s, 6K7s and 5 tube AC/DC radios. We just moved back to CO and there is still an actual Radio Shack here. Haven't been in yet so don't know if it's real or just a cellphone shop, but I'm hoping.

Yes, another one here! It was a sad day when Heathkit went away. Someone "bought" the name and introduced a small kit or two (very expensive). However, I haven't seen or heard anything about them in about one year.

Ahh...the smell of solder smoke! It gets in your blood.....and makes you crazy!

Do you remember taking tubes to the local drug store and testing them on their machine?

I just remembered (Fred)..........

You may yet be able to get those Radio Shack items that you've always longed for! They had "auction #1" last month. This implies there will be further auctions????

Myself, I'm not sure that I want to pay the bid prices for something like an old TRS-80 computer. 5 1/4" floppies are getting hard to find. Some of the bidding was unbelievable.

Proving once again that people will bid outrageous sums of money for darned near anything. ( I think that is Flea-Bay's business model)

David, what makes you crazy is the lead you inhailed from the rosin lead core solder of days gone by. Cry

I wonder what happened to all those tube checkers that use to be at the drug stores? I guess someone is auctioning them off for big money? LOL

<<<<-----  Still owns, and it works, a Harman Kardon Citation II, a "newer" 825 preamp, with a Marantz True Stereo Tuner, and a Nakamichi Dragon tape deck, powering some Klipsch Horn Loaded towers, KG40's. In the bedroom... LOL

Oh, forgot, also a Pioneer "rotisserie" CD player.. 5 discs.. that's like music forever...

We still have our Sony equivalent to the 5-disc player. One load on shuffle is all you need for several hours of entertainment.

Keep 'em coming, David! The only problem is...

It's keeping me away from my other project:

I have not looked at Popular Mechanics in quite some time. I thoroughly enjoyed the magazine but, I realized that I can get myself in plenty of trouble (with projects) without their help.
