I want to replace the factory mattress on my 172 bunk bed. Does anyone have any suggestions short of a custom mattress? I'm willing to spend a little to get a really good one.

We purchased a 2 1/2" gel foam mattress topper that you don't have to cut to fit. Just do a google search for short queen size. We found ours on Amazon.

We replaced ours with one from the Original Mattress Factory.  You give them the measurements, and they make it.  You can spend as little or as much as you want, depending on what you pick out.

I ordered a custom gel foam from mattress insider. Not a bad price. I'll report how I like it once I sleep on it a few times. I'm planning a three week trip through the neighborhood - Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, in mid-September. That will be a good test.

Small hint for everyone, if you buy a foam mattress or topper and you have to cut the foam to size, the best way to get a nice clean cut is to use your old electric knife... you know the one, it's sitting in the back of your cupboard behind the Foreman grill :-)
It cuts though nice and clean in one pass.

We measured the space and ordered a piece of custom cut foam.  You can get the density that you like and there are several kinds of foam available.  My wife made a cover for it and we had our new mattress for our 172 for under $130 including the cover materials.  I searched the Internet and found that prices vary considerably.  I got the foam from a place in Minn. and they mailed it to me.  They have a local store and a web sales outlet.  Prices are a little for the store, but you have to go there to get them.

We had previously cut out the upper bunk leaving a shelf for the part next to the head.  When I got the new mattress, I raised the bed about 5 1/2".  It added about 3 inches of extra width.  The only bad thing is the shelf is right at the height of my knees so I have bumped them a few times while in bed.  But I'm getting used to it and it's happening less.  The nice thing about the extra height is that one can sit on the bed at pretty much normal seat height.  .... much easier for my old bones.
