WHAT IS IT?  An opportunity to meet some Podders up in Arizona’s high county at the Dogtown Lake Campgrounds near Williams, AZ.  The campgrounds are located 6.5 miles SE of Williams in the Kaibab National Forest.

WHAT TO DO?  Swat flies & tell lies around the campfire, fish for trout in the lake or go kayaking, take a unique hike up Davenport Hill, go to Bearizona or the Deer Park.  Don’t what to cook there’s nice restaurants, micro beers, and wines in Williams.  There will be a dinner/potluck in the evenings for those wishing to participate and a group campfire...bring your marshmallows and adult beverages Ermm.

PRAY-TELL, WHEN? Approve  June 8th thru the 10th, 2018.

NOTES. The lakes at the 7,000 foot level, mas o menos, days will be around 75 and nights 40 degrees.  AZ’s monsoon season begins June 15th and ends September 30th.

Fast Eddie, there’s only 3 miles of well maintained gravel road to transverse...no excuses.

Mr. Perkin’s nice R Pod jacket Big smile

We are in loop “B” site 41 from June 7th, leaving on the 11th.  Loop “B” campsites are generally larger in size than loop “A”.  Generally speaking the sites on the outer side of the loop are the preferred sites, larger in size and back to open areas.

Fishing?  yes, YES, and yes.

Dogtown Lake is prodigiously stocked with trout for two reasons, first for sport fishermen and secondly for the osprey, fishing eagles, that summer there each year and have their nests south/east of the lake high up in the pines.  Ospreys will out fish the sport fisherman 4 to 1 to feed their hatchlings.  They’ll fold their wings 40 to 100 feet above the water dive in to catch a trout.  Once caught the osprey will maneuver the trout to a head forward position before taking flight.

There,s also a small alpine like lake in a remote area, without the extended mountains, that’s barbless hooks only.  Would like to fly fish it with waders some day.

In addition there are two other lakes in the general vicinity.

Should be a fun time at Dogtown we’ll be catching it before the monsoons fire up and just before the summer crowds show up.  There’s generally a good mix of folks, lots of seniors, family orientated folks, couples and singles that “just want to get away”.  It’s not a “party animal” type of campground.

Reta spent an afternoon photographing the osprey I’ll try to include a few shots in one of the gallery albums at some future point.  She also got a shot of a young osprey, pre flight age, still nesting high in the Ponderosa Pine nest.  Shot was taken at the far side of Whitehorse Lake, another adjacent lake in the general area.

Just checked the weather near Dog Town Lake, snowing with a temp of 21 F and a low of 7 F tonight.

The squirrels will be buried deep in their tree top dens, the bears deep in slumber, the big cats wouldn’t be hunting tonight and elk have moved to lower grounds.  All will be still, frozen in motion, silent as the blanket of snow reigns over the high country.  For now, spring is but a distant hope.

But as the days become longer and the sun’s rays break the grip of winter awakening creatures and plant life the mood of this this country changes quickly as does the lake.  Spring and summer come quickly to the high country.

Might make it up to Dogtown Lake to Join you. I have an Dr's appointment in Qsite on the 31st of May before I leave for the summer. I think this summer we will be all over New Mexico State Parks. I like the RV camping deals they have to offer for there state parks. $250 for a yearly pass, and only $4.00 a day for electric in any of there parks. That's hard to beat for my summer travel.
