Hi. Please tell me what kind of wood/ or what ever, kind of screws Forest River used in the interior of the 2017 R-Pod 179. I do not have a screw driver that will even come close to working.  ThanksEmbarrassed

They are Robertson screws.  Klein makes a great 9 or 11 in one screwdriver that comes with 2 sizes of Robertson bits.  They are also commonly used for electrical work.  And I think they are used more in Canada than in the US for some reason.  You can pick up Klein tools at Home Depot or on Amazon.

The reason they are used is that they can be torqued harder than a standard cross-tip (Phillips) screw without experiencing cam out. Plus, if the right size Robertson screwdriver is used, the screw holds on the driver pretty well for starting in tight places. The link below has a lot of fascinating information about the various screw head designs.

The reason Canadians use the square head screws, they are better than slot screws or phillips. Oh did I tell you it's a Canadian invention.

Thanks Guys. Before posting I went to Ace Hardware. They had no idea what I was talking about. So, again thanks, and I’m off to Lowes in the morning.

For southerners south of the border and not really in the know they are sometimes called square drives. The screws used by FR and many other companies are #2 Robertson but your hardware store may know them as #2 square drives. Some screws are actually a double square which looks very much like, and are often confused with, a Torx (sometimes called star) but the Robertson will still fit.

The article I linked stated that Robertson had an issue with a British firm that cost him a lot of money  to get his design back so he then refused to license the screw head to anyone else. That kept them from widespread use even though they are a superior design to Phillips screws which were not so constrained.

Believe it or not, I'd never heard of the "Robertson" screw head. I've been using square drive screws for quite a while, I was just ignorant of the Robertson designation.

As for superior screw heads, I've been partial to the Torx head for a while now.

In any case, there are a number of designs that are superior for the generic Philips head screw. I think one of the main distinguishing features is that the sides are straight up and down as opposed to slanted. The straight sided heads are much less likely to torque out.

Agreed. Square is slightly tapered which helps the screwdriver to hold the screw. The article did not specify whether there is any taper to the Torx or Torx Plus but the screwdriver does seem to grip the screw also. I have had both cam-out but neither of them is as bad as Phillips in that regard.

I went to Lowes looking for a Robertson (square) screw driver. Lowes did not have one. Went to Home Depot and found exactly what I wanted. A number #1 with a common screwdriver handle. I brought a screw from my Pod to be sure of the fit. Problem solved.
