Up in cold NJ after having the RV winterized we put in the largest damp rid we could buy and several dryer pads (to keep out mice). The RPOD smelled great in the spring. The damp rid container was full of water. So that was moisture that would have been in the RV. We also cleaned the RV and then covered it with the Poly Pro 3. So it looked like new when we opened it up and it was easy to sell. We did not remove the battery just turned it off using the cut off switch and the battery was good to go as well despite the cold winter

I agree with StephenH. And the water heater will take 5/6 gallons of antifreeze.

And that is a huge waste of antifreeze. Use the bypass. I use 16 oz. of antifreeze each year to winterize our 177 in northern Michigan. Been doing it this way with compressed air since 2012.

Greetings: I bypass the water heater so that I do not get antifreeze in it, blow out the lines, fill the traps. I store outside in the MN winter on a pad. I cover with the poly cover. Remove the battery which is kept on a smart charger. The tanks I empty but the small amount of water left won't hurt anything. The poly cover helps keep the outside from fading, and the snow and ice off the top. I have owned a pod for 9 years, The 179 is my second Crankster 78 R-179 2015

Richand Cindy, your battery survives the winter not being charged because of the cold weather not despite it. Batteries last longer stored cold as long as they're charged, a fully charged battery won't freeze till -70F or so. If you were in a warmer climate and left your battery without being charged all winter it would more likely be a boat anchor by spring because the self discharge and corrosion rates are much higher when its warmer. If it was me I would leave it on trickle charge or charge it every few weeks or so just to be sure but that's me.

Jato/SH/etal,
IF you are putting antifreeze in thru the water pump, I agree it is best to bypass water heater, that is the purpose of the WH bypass. No reason to fill water heater with anti freeze. If you are using compressed air and not adding anti freeze thru the water pump, there is no reason to bypass the water heater. I add a small amount of antifreeze to the traps and toilet, that's it. I use a Johnny Chock and compressed air to clear the toilet valve so there is no water in it. |

mcarter The only reason I utilize the bypass is to drain out the WH to check out my anode rod (still using the original since purchase in January 2011) and to check for any crud that may come out (usually there is a small amount) while draining. You bring up a great point however that I never considered before, as far as not using the bypass valves at all.

I by pass and remove the anode rod and leave it out for the winter. By removing this sacrificial rod I can like jato does flush out the hot water heater. Anyways, for those who are needing RV antifreeze I picked up two gallons this week at my local Wally World (Walmart) for a whopping $2.58 a gallon, a great deal! This should last me for a number of years.

Be careful about leaving the anode rod out——-in my part of NC, the mud daubers and other critters would love the water heater for a nest. I plug it back in looseley when I winterize
