Yep, between Thanksgiving and Easter there are few visitors to Hatteras Island, so pretty much everything shuts down in the winter. The year round population of Hatteras Island is only about 1500 families so it turns into a 60 mile long rural village.

Its not sub zero like Vermont can be but when its 35-40 degrees, raining, and blowing 30+ knots, it feels pretty dang cold by our standards. When the wind drops we do get some days in the high 50's or low 60's in winter which makes for a nice break.  I think pretty much anywhere you go on the East Coast you  can get 6 months of good weather, just different months.

I know the feeling! We live in Vermont’s Northeast Kingtom, we are an hour and a half to any decent mall or large town for really nice restaurants etc. For something it is easier to go up to Sherbrooke, QUe.

Tons of deer down here, too many. I believe I saw a red wolf once while driving between Nag's Head and Oregon Inlet. Hard to tell because I understand that once they reintroduced them in Alligator River they began interbreeding with the coyotes.

IMHO OTA TV is pretty pointless anymore, I'm planning on taking my antenna off to make room for more solar. The cell signal at Oregon Inlet is about the weakest along Hiway 12 but it comes in ok with my booster, so Netflix and Hulu are good...

What I like about Oregon Inlet is you're only about 10 minutes from Nag's Head and less than 30 from Kitty Hawk, so you have all kinds of restaurants and even a movie theater to choose from. From here in Hatteras Village dinner and movie is out of the question, a 3 hour round trip is just too much for an evening. But from Or inlet its easy. So sometimes we go camping to get closer to civilization...

We saw all kinds of deer tracks crossing the vehicle entrance to the beach, good size tracks. Had an eagle fly over the campground while we were there too!
We also got 12-13 channels off the pods antennae but weren’t to impressed with them.
We really liked it, it’s going to be our new spot for the OBX. Though I did miss being close to Lisa’s pizza and the hot wings!!

Yeah, do you really need a swimming pool when the ocean water temp is 82? The sites at Oregon Inlet are pretty open, unlike Frisco, so while there's more space around you than at the private places there really isn't much more privacy. I still would pick Frisco over Oregon Inlet in the spring and fall when nightime temps are comfortable. Besides, Frisco is all of 5 minutes from my house, so it's great camping without the driving, can't complain about that!

$35 is an incredible deal compared to Camp Hatteras or Hatteras KOA at $100 a night.  No, you don't get the swimming pool and mini-golf, but I would rather have the more spacious sites and nature around me!

Its $7 extra for the electric sites on top of the $28 for a regular site (or $14 is you're an old guy like I am). No senior pass discount on the hookups, I guess the electricity doesn't know how old you are. $21 a night for a hookup site is a real deal on the OBX, if its summer and you need the a/c.

They were charging $35.00 per night for the w/e sites and $28 for the non hookup sites.during the nights we stayed, there were always w/e open at least 3-5 sites each night.

Oregon Inlet did 26 or 27 sites to water/electric. The ranger told me that after they close I at Thanksgiving they are going to do another 26-27 site with water/electric, she advised that they were going to complete Oregon Inlet and then more on to the other parks ( she thought).

Depends on the time of year. Midsummer ya pretty much have to have a/c here, it can be insufferable without it.

They did a good job at Oregon inlet with segregating the pedestal sites from the non electric ones. The pedestal ones are nearer the highway and farther from the beach. I guess the theory is that at the electric ones folks will have their a/c on and windows closed which will reduce the road noise.

They do expect a lot of demand for the pedestal sites once everyone knows about them. Book early if you want one.
