Topic: Anode Socket & Screw Sizes Posted: 04 Nov 2018 at 6:47am |
In the (first time for me) process of winterizing this weekend and decided to pull the anode rod. Anyone know offhand the socket size of the nut head? I assume it’s SAE.
Also, for you intrepid modders who’ve put screws in the interior walls, what’s the maximum size screw (depth or length) I can use that will give me the most bite yet keep me safely away from puncturing the outer skin? Thanks in advance.

1-1/16 inch. 27mm should work also if you're a metric guy.
The wall cavity is 1 inch but its foam filled and the wall material is thin so anything where the shank penetrates more than 1/4 inch is probably going to have the same pullout strength. For more strength you can try to hit the aluminum box tubing in the walls, depending on what you're trying to do.
Here's a great video of what's going on in the walls.

Be sure you relieve the pressure in the tank before you pull the anode rod. Even if it has been some time since you had the pump on. I know from experience that the pressure can blow both the rod and the 1/2" socket set a good 10 feet.

Are those dimensions the total thickness or just the foam?

John,
I also relieve pressure to tank, but also uncap low point drains.
