Topic: New rpod owner, question on fridge ventilation Posted: 08 Apr 2019 at 5:49pm |
Just our rpod 190 and the twi 8:16 vents, one below and one at top on slide have
Large rectangular holes about 5/8 x 3/8. Large enough for any bees, Can i put screen over to stop the bees from nesting or could i increase the heat ?, I do not plan on using propane and i am going to place a wired temperature probe in there To record the heat on hot days, no shade, does anyone have experience with this Or max temps the fridge should experience ? |

Absolutely! I have screens over all the vents (refrigerator, water heater, and furnace) on our 179. When we first got it, we had a problem where mud daubers had built a nest in the refrigerator flue and the flames were shooting out toward the regulator instead of going up the flue. It was December, and the dealer tried to say it was in the week we had owned it that the bees did that. I argued that we had several hard freezes and the bees were not active. They fixed it. After that trip, I put screens on the openings and have not had a problem since.

+1 StephenH We did this after having issues with bees and such building where they shouldn't. Took some screen, cut it to fit and then hot glued it on the inside of the vent panels. The other problem we had the first couple years was it seemed like the refer didn't cool very well, especially when the ambient temperature outside was 80 or above. Come to find out, from my "smart" brother, the bimetal switch that turns the muffin fans on, was located way too low on the back of the fridge. By moving it up about 3 inches, near the top of the refer about 2 inches from the exhaust stack, the muffin fans came on almost instantly and since then the refer keeps everything in the fridge and freezer very cold, even on those hot 90+ degree days. Does help if you can park your pod so that the refer side faces east so it doesn't have that afternoon sun beating on it, if you don't have any shade from trees.

We have screen on all vents and since I put it on, we've had no issues with any wasps or such getting into the appliances. I used SS screen I got on Amazon and made all my own covers, but as others point out, you can buy ready made ones. If I counted the labor, what I put in would be more expensive, but since I'm retired, I'm not allowed to. Total cost of my materials was about $12.

Good job being proactive about this issue. Whether you choose the custom screens or the cut to fit route, this is a doable project for the owner!
