Has anyone ever had a cotter pin holding the hitch pin disappear?
Twice now my hitch pin was in danger of falling out because my cotter pin either slipped out or was severed!
I have now purchased a locking hitch pin and hope never to look upon the sight of a loose hitch pin again!

When I first purchased my 179 (July 2018) I changed out the cotter/hitch pin out for a "locking hitch pin" on the hold down for ball hitch and never have had a problem, I just got to remember to attach the 179 to the tow vehicle then we're good.  Have safe travels.

Are you referring to the pin to hold the hitch shank in the receiver? If so, that would be really bad to have that fall out. I also went with a locking pin for the hitch shank. I got it as part of a kit that included the locking pin for the hitch ball and a lock to insert in place of the hitch ball when the trailer is disconnected. The advantage is that they are all keyed alike so I don't need to carry three separate keys.

Yes, the pin holding the hitch shank in the receiver disappeared. It either slid out or got sheared off. No more "pins" for me.

Wow that could have been catastrophic....I thought that you were talking about the safety pin on the lever for securing the hitch to the ball (that's the one I changed over).  I have never had that experience just be glad that you can talk about it.

We have a locking pin for the hitch shank too, as well as a locking pin for the ball clamp lever. I had them and our ball socket lock keyed the same so that I only have one key to worry about (they're all TriMax brand).

Are you positive you are installing them? I have been towing stuff for 45 years and never lost one. Most of mine are this type:

And a few like this:

You say "cotter pin". There should actually be a hitch pin clip that locks onto the hitch pin. In the picture above posted by Motor7, the fat thing is the hitch pin, and the thinner, curvey thing is the hitch pin clip. The clip should be inserted such that it clamps onto the hitch pin.

I've never lost one of those.

I have never lost one, however I have had the hitch pin stolen. Lock it.
