The water heater would not ignite In the gas mode, on our recently purchased 179. DSI light was staying on. Checked the flume, and the reset switches, they were fine. Checked the ignition control board, which was mounted to the water heater by double sided tape and a cable tie. Discovered the Q3 contacts located on the back of the circuit board covered by the double sided tape to be burned out.

This is a Suburban Water Heater SW6DE, replacement board $100+ (Made in China) 90 day warranty. We purchased a new Dinosaur Electric, UIB S (small) $88+ (Made in USA) 3 year warranty. Working great, easy fix. However would recommend purchasing a cover/case as old Suburban case will not fit. It is slightly bigger. The UIB S also has a 5 amp fuse built in, along with some LED lights and some test ports. It gets really good reviews

Hopes this helps with any water heater ignition problems

Thank you for this information. I have not experienced any problems with our water heater, but it is good to file the information for future reference if needed.

Quick water heater question,
I'm at Shenandoah national Park at 3000' my water heater fires for 6 seconds and then the flame turns off this started happening yesterday, it worked fine the first two days.
Propane tanks are full and everything else propane related works fine.
Any thoughts?

You are obviously getting gas and an ignition spark if it fires for 6 seconds. Sounds like maybe a blockage? and it can't keep up with enough propane fast enough?

Its probably the flame probe electrode not contacting the flame properly. If it doesn't make contact the control board will think that the flame has gone out and will shut off the propane for safety. The probe can be adjusted. Here is a link to the service manual.  Troubleshooting guides are around page 19.

You might want to check for a spider web in the burner tube that also could be a contributor.

or a wasp nest. I put screens on all openings to prevent them from getting in and building nests.

Thanks for all the ideas to check! The burner blows full force for the first six seconds and then goes out oh, it did this three times. I'm thinking it must be the flame sensor. I took it apart made sure the Gap was correct in position properly, and no change
Thanks MJ for the manual going to take a hard look at it tomorrow.
Real spotty cell service up here.

Kahunp37,
Still noodling the hot water heater, it's the same model as yours. is the control panel behind the small oval black case below the ignition tube near the gas valve?
And now won't light at all, there's no spark, but gas does flow. I can light it with a lighter though but it still goes off after five or six seconds. Fortunately I could just fire it with the generator on electric to get hot water from my wife's nightly shower. As I said before the stove is fine the furnace works fine the refrigerator on propane works fine so it must a problem in the unit somehow.
Thanks John
