Topic: Bike Bounce Video Posted: 05 Jan 2021 at 11:02am |
I put together a 2-minute video of toting two of my mountain bikes on the back hitch of my R-Pod 179 using a Let's Go Aero 2 bike rack (FR recommended rack). If anyone is interested in seeing the effects of bounce on the bikes and hitch when traveling, this should provide some insight. I fully understand why some people have their frame and hitch area reinforced.

All I can say is. Wow. I would never mount my bikes on that kind of mount. I think the only viable alternative would be to use a 2" mount with a properly welded on 2" receiver.

I use the stromberg carlson bike bunk tongue mount, and those work pretty good, and you can actually see them in your rearview mirror, so much safer in my opinion. I manufactured a new spacer for it that gets all the play out of the receiver, and my bikes don't even move. much better than any rear mount

Thanks John. I cheat by either putting our road bikes in the bed of the truck or inside our 177 while traveling. They are very lightweight Specialized road bikes with carbon components, each weighing in at 17.5 - 18 lbs. I really dislike cleaning chains, chainwheels, frame from road debris/oils/sand/dirt. So by doing it that way, all those issues are eliminated.

A few tie-downs and easily cured. No biggie.

Thanks, John, for a very interesting video.
We have a rack that takes a 1 1/4 inch receiver and is attached to the back of our trailer on the bumper. One of the things we do to mitigate the bounce is use some bungee cords to tighten up the top part of the bikes. We attach it to the ladder on the back the trailer.

Yeah, the back of the 179 has little or nothing to hook bungees to. I am likely going to install a 2" hitch receiver on the front of my Tundra for longer hauls. Curt Mfg has one that fits for $130ish. Thanks!

Pilot, since you have a pickup, why not just put the bikes in the truck bed? You can get one of those tailgate covers that holds up to 8 bikes for $100-$150. I have the Thule one for my Sierra, it works great.
