Topic: OBD Scanner? Posted: 15 Jun 2021 at 9:39pm |
I was reading a post the other day about a scanner that will monitor the engine in real time. It plugs into the OBD2 port used for reading codes. The scanner that was being discussed monitored engine and transmission temps, RPMs, engine temps... I'm a newbie, but they were discussing a piece of equipment that will let you know, among many things, how the engine is doing as you trudge along up and down hills. Can someone help me with this piece of equipment? I thought it was called "something Gen 2" or something like that, but what are you using to monitor pressures and temps on the TV?
I need to add a trans and oil cooler to my 07 Taco to get it tow ready and I want to get a baseline before I add these, and then be able to monitor as I'm towing my 179. Any help appreciated!

Depends on your vehicle. The 2016 Escape had transmission temperature, but the 2010 Frontier doesn't.

I am using a ScanGauge II in my 08 Tacoma and love it. It has trans and water temp a long with live time MPG. The best thing I added was a larger trans cooler, dropped temp 20+ degrees.

Yep, this was the one I had seen in that forum, thank you! It's listed around $160, and the Ultra Gauge in the following post is listed at only $80. I'll check them both out, thank you!

Excellent, thank you. And, it's half price of the ScanGauge II. What year is your Taco, and did you buy the wireless Ultra Gauge or hard wired?
Thank you!

I use this:
I use OBD Fusion app on iPhone. Works well with my '08 4Runner and '07 Subaru Forrester. 4Runner reports transmission temp. Subaru does not. App is good for getting and resetting trouble codes. fred

I started with a ultra-gauge but it did not have trans temp for Toyota's, so I bought a ScanGauge II. I would make sure the new ones do, I still have my ultra-gauge setting in the garage.

So, the ScanGauge II does have the trans temp for your Toyota? I definitely want that. I was reading that my specific model (07 Prerunner) may not report the code, therefore, no scanner will be able to report it. I'm trying to verify whether it's the scanner or the Taco that is the problem.

Yes, the ScanGauge II has trans temp for my 08 Tacoma, I called ScanGauge to get the codes. If I were you I wound call and check. If your Toyota does NOT have a trans fluid dip stick, it will have a temperature sensor, it's how Toyota changes the fluid that needs to be done at a set temp. If you haven't replaced your small trans cooler with a larger one, it would be a good idea.
