I have a "light" weight Mountain bike and the ride on mine vs my son's who has a cheap (heavy) Mountain bike is day and night different.  With my bike I'm able to pull it up of the front tire to go over things and also longer trips seems to do well. For several years we ran the Boy Scout Biking merit Badge where we put on at the least 175 mile in a season.

After reading the replies here and also talking with a friend of mine that knows bikes, I think I will go with a mountain bike.  Something with at least a dozen gears to help on hills and let me rest up on the canal trails around me.

My friend is pushing me to open my wallet a little more to get something a little lighter.  I don't know - is shaving 5-6 pounds off the bike worth it when I'll be able to shave far more than that from my waist (starting in January!)?  I went through the same dillema when I went "ultralight" with my backpacking gear a few years ago.  In that case every pound is carried by me every step so weight won out.  Not so sure with a bike.

Potential "coolness" in the basement?!

I suggest you get it cleaned up and back on the pavement....show the world that you are indeed cool and bad to the bone!  LOL

[QUOTE=TheDogHouse]David - I think I had the same bike as a kid, that brings back memories... ahhh the "Cheater Slick"
I've aged and gotten lazy at the same time. These days the campground grocery getter is a cheap "Chinese knock off" of the vintage Vespa scooter. It's fun but something not to wander to far off upon as you may be pushing it back to camp as well.

Yes, it brings back memories for a number of people.  It's a conversation starter.Smile

I have a multi-speed mountain bike.  The only thing I did was put a more comfortable seat on it.  I find the gears are nice going uphill (no Lance wannabe here).

However, if you want to be the coolest dude in the campground, get yourself one of these:

Put your shades on and cruise the campground on this and your fellow campers will acknowledge you as THE MAN!

A retro bike goes good with a retro styled camper.  Way cool! Smile

PS - It's probably the only "Sting-Ray" i'll ever own. Ouch

My wife and I have GT multi-speed road bikes: extra large 31" wheels, skinny tires. Really, really fast on paved trails with very little effort required, but very hard and sometimes impossible to use on dirt trails.

We both wish we'd bought mountain bikes with smaller wheels and fatter tires so we could take advantage of more trail types. We're willing to go a bit slower on paved trails.

My buddy is a heavy duty mountain biker, and he's found that he only uses very few of the available gears on his Gary Fisher bike, so he's just bought a single speed mountain bike. Much lighter, simpler, and cheaper than his multi-speed.

Not sure if I'd go with a single speed, but it works for him. Something to think about, anyway.
