Terry's thread about his bike reminded me.  My wife and I are about to dive into the world of bikes.  We haven't owned any for ourselves in over 15 years, but we are about to buy one for each of us so we can ride as a family (the kids already have them).  My wife wants a comfy cruiser, I'm not sure what I want yet - a cruiser, a multi-speed road bike, a mountain bike, or a hybrid.  I'm not looking to spend a grand on the lightest and latest, at most a few hundred.

Anyone have any thoughts?

    Danette and I have fold up bikes they have the advantage that we can fold them both up and load them in the back of our SUV's and still have the rear seats in the up position. The disadvantage not as comfortable in riding as a larger heavier bike.     David

I have a mountain bike that I use.  I have carried it inside the r-pod but will be modding a rack for the outside.  I have looked at the folding bikes but they have not come up cheap enough for me to jump on one yet.  I also have to be careful they are large enough for me (6'4")

My wife and I have GT multi-speed road bikes: extra large 31" wheels, skinny tires. Really, really fast on paved trails with very little effort required, but very hard and sometimes impossible to use on dirt trails.
 
We both wish we'd bought mountain bikes with smaller wheels and fatter tires so we could take advantage of more trail types. We're willing to go a bit slower on paved trails.
 
My buddy is a heavy duty mountain biker, and he's found that he only uses very few of the available gears on his Gary Fisher bike, so he's just bought a single speed mountain bike. Much lighter, simpler, and cheaper than his multi-speed.
 
Not sure if I'd go with a single speed, but it works for him. Something to think about, anyway.

I have a multi-speed mountain bike.  The only thing I did was put a more comfortable seat on it.  I find the gears are nice going uphill (no Lance wannabe here).
 
However, if you want to be the coolest dude in the campground, get yourself one of these:
 
 
Put your shades on and cruise the campground on this and your fellow campers will acknowledge you as THE MAN! 
 
A retro bike goes good with a retro styled camper.  Way cool! Smile
 
PS - It's probably the only "Sting-Ray" i'll ever own. Ouch

I've aged and gotten lazy at the same time. These days the campground grocery getter is a cheap "Chinese knock off" of the vintage Vespa scooter. It's fun but something not to wander to far off upon as you may be pushing it back to camp as well.
 
Yes, it brings back memories for a number of people.  It's a conversation starter.Smile
