Topic: Camping Suggestions in Canada's Maritime Provinces Posted: 15 Jul 2023 at 4:49pm |
We are trying to plan a two or three week trip from our home in eastern Connecticut up into the Canadian Maritime Provinces. The Bay of Fundy is, of course, a must stop, but I know nothing about camping in New Brunswick or Nova Scotia.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Would this be a good year to go up there? The weather report last night showed the vast majority of the entire country on fire, and the prevailing westerlies were driving all the smoke to the east.

The biggest problem right now is the rain that's been hitting the north east. Plus, who knows what hurricanes will find their way far north as the western Atlantic is practically as warm as a bathtub; good hurricane fuel. The smoke is swirling south the the mid-western states in the US and not making it to the north east.
We were camping at Hapgood Pond in Vermont last weekend and decided to leave on Monday instead of Tuesday. We had no idea how serious the rain was when we pulled out of the campground, despite me being soaked from hooking up the trailer. On the way out of the campground we got our first taste of the flooding situation as we had to drive through campground roads over flooded with water from small creeks. When we got to Londonderry, VT, on the way to I-91, we were turned back by local fire department folks who said all the routes in that direction were washed out. Thankfully, Mx. Google GPS routed us home via a westerly southerly route. We saw plenty of flooded rivers, but none made the roads impassable. Our next trip was supposed to be to Winhall Brook campground, but our reservation was cancelled. The campground is now closed for the season.

They touched on that this morning on NPR. The reporter was saying the ocean temperature off the coast of Miami was 98° F. That's almost hot tub temperature. Unbelievable for us in the Bay Area where the ocean temp is usually close to 59° F.

Yikes, that's almost enough to cook a fish. Around us it's in the low to mid 70's, so it doesn't cool down at night. I miss the fog coming over twin peaks and blasting through the Golden Gate. Makes for very nice evenings anchored out at Angel Island.

Our reservation for Winhall got cancelled. I looked at the reservation.gov site and it looks like everything has been shut down for the rest of the season. Maybe they'll get it fixed up by next year and we can try to go there again.
I haven't checked out other campgrounds' status after the flooding, but I imagine a number of them got hit pretty badly. It's pretty sad since national forest camp grounds are quite rare around these parts.

We just got back from Vermont. We were in the driveway of a VRBO rental, pretty high up. Waterbury got hit with flooding, but not as bad as Montpelier. Our plans had to be rather fluid because of the situation. The field where we usually conduct Vacation Bible School was a lake for a couple of days. It drained, but might have flooded again with the additional rain that Vermont got after we left. I sympathize with those who had plans that are out the window now. I just hope that those areas that got hit hard can recover quickly.

Extreme weather and disasters are such a nuisance these days.
